Minors

We offer five minors through the School of Nursing. You may also pursue a minor in Penn’s  School of Arts and Sciences or School of Engineering and Applied Science. If you are interested, meet with your Nursing advisor to build the minor into your plan of study. We often suggest that you take a course in your department of interest before formally declaring a minor.

Most minor programs require between six and nine courses. Depending on the specific minor, you may be able to fulfill the requirements through free electives or other courses. If not, you’ll need to take summer courses to complete it.  

Global Health Minor

This minor offers students the option of focusing their studies on either the domestic or international level. Opportunities are provided via clinical experiences and students gain advanced multicultural knowledge and skills. It is our goal that graduates will rise to professional leadership roles, serving as catalysts to disseminate new research and clinical skills as they work among diverse social and cultural groups.

Health Communications Minor

The Health Communication minor is a collaboration between the School of Nursing and the Annenberg School for Communication. This program expands students’ knowledge of the communication process, theory, and behavior, and prepares them for roles as professionals who develop cutting edge models for health behavior intervention or who implement patient education and health communications programs locally, nationally, and globally.

 

History, Health, & Humanities Minor

This innovative minor provides students with the tools and perspectives to study clinical issues through a different lens than the one provided by natural or social sciences, and amplifies the humanities components of the Judgement, Inquiry, Voice, and Engagement pillars that define the “Penn Advantage.”

Nursing & Health Services Management Minor 

Increasingly, the delivery of health care involves decisions that entail considerations beyond clinical or medical issues. With the rise of managed care in the United States, it is critical for health professionals to understand not only the clinical factors that affect patients, but also the business environment in which healthcare institutions function. A partnership between the School of Nursing and The Wharton School, this program helps students understand both the nature of the economic and managerial constraints that healthcare organizations face, as well as how these constraints can be effectively managed to provide the best possible health care for patients.

Nutrition Minor 

This minor is a collaboration between the School of Nursing and the School of Arts and Sciences and is designed to provide a broad view of the field of nutrition. The minor features an interdisciplinary approach that illustrates the pervasiveness of nutrition-related issues in such diverse disciplines as anthropology, economics, folklore, history, physiology, psychology, health care, and public policy. We push students to develop critical thinking skills by analyzing the role of nutrition in today’s society from the perspective of several academic disciplines. Students have some flexibility in choosing courses from a core of basic science and nutrition courses, as well as interdisciplinary electives. The joint Nutrition Minor consists of a minimum of six or seven courses.
